Faith in Action:  The Social Action Committee

“…Then the righteous will answer Him and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?' And the King will say to them in reply, 'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.'"  Matthew 25:37-40

The Sacred Heart Social Action Committee coordinates parish services to the poor and disadvantaged within the parish, in Wethersfield, and in the Greater Hartford Area. Especially here, we have so many opportunities to live up to the parish motto as "the little parish with the big heart." Activities include:
  • Sandwich Makers  The Committee coordinates the collection of sandwiches made by parishioners for distribution to homeless people by the street outreach program of the Immaculate Conception Shelter in Hartford.

  • Jesse Tree  During Advent, parishioners donate Christmas gifts for individuals who are living in shelters, have little money, are ill, or who do not have families to care for them.  The Committee collects and donates the gifts through local groups and organizations that serve those who need our care.

  • Coats for Kids  The Committee coordinates and annual donation of good-condition winter coats to children in need at Fox Elementary School in Hartford.

  • Food Drive  Twice each year, the Committee carries out a nonperishable food collection for the Town of Wethersfield Food Bank.

  • Baby Items  In the Spring, the Committee collects baby items for residents of the St. Agnes Home and Family Center for pregnant teens and new single mothers.

  • Friendly Visits  At Easter and Christmas, Committee members visit parishioners who are home-bound or in nursing homes.

  • Share a Meal  Twice a year, the Committee prepares a meal and hosts a Bingo game for residents of Plimpton House, a supportive housing facility in Hartford.

The Social Action Committee is responsible for these and other wonderful programs in which you may participate. In the words of Blessed Mother Theresa, "Do you feel the call to serve Jesus in His distressing disguise?" Please contact Rosemary Sponzo ( or anyone on the Social Action Committee to join in serving our neighbors in need and our Lord.
